SIR KAI HO-KAI

HONOURED.

Glowing Tributes to his

Public Services.

As we briefly reported in our issue of that day, Sir Kai No-kai, was on Saturday, at the City Hall, entertained by the leading Chinese merchants of the Colony and presented with a magnificent embroidered address in eilk and a number of beautiful silver articles, in token of their appre- ciation of his public work,

по

In opening the proceedings, Mr. Chiu Yu-tin, who presided, said:-Gentlemen,-To-day meet in this Assembly Hall to do bonour to our most respected and esteemed friend. This friend is no other than the well known Dr. Sir Kai-Ho-kai. Sir Kai was born in Hongkong, grew up in Hongkong, and for over 50 years has been a permanent resident of this "Colony. His whole life and energy have entirely brea devoted to the wellbeing of the Chinese residents here. Whether among official circles of the Government or among traders of the commercial community there is not one, I may boldly say, who has not known or heard of the name of Ho Kai. Every one of you gentlemen here to-day has had the privilege of being personally acquainted with him. What kind of man he is, what he has done for our Chinese, you all know, gentlemen, and it le necessary for me repeat here. Those who had only a pessing acquaintance, with him know perhaps in a general way that he has occupied a high posi tion; that he has been honour- ed by H.M. the King and that he has worked for our good and assisted us in our difficulties. Bat, gentlemen, to be what Sir Kai is it is not merely that. Although I am not an able speaker, yet I would tell you something of him which inspires our highest re- #peot.

The Fountain of Virtue. The reason why the achieve- ments of eminent men of all times became so beneficial to mankind and lasting in effect is not that they were men of great learning or of vast experience but because they were men of high morale. For whatever they did it came from the fountain of virtue. No men, who has no virtue in him could perform any deed which would be a benefit to mankind. Sir Kai possesses a kind beart and is always siming to elevate the standard of his own, people. Throughout his life he has never been boastful of his own achieve- ments nor did he ever olaima any credit for, himself. In sit movements which he undertook he never lost sight of the great principle of what is good for the world and what is beneficial to map. These are his personal qualities which we so deeply admire and respect and we often wish to have an opportunity of
