At the Police Court, this, morning. before Mr. C. D. Melbourno a man named Joseph Blackwell omployed on the s. 8. Ixion, was charged with stealing and carrying away ship's cargo to the value of $630. He pleaded guilty.

Mr. Lewis, of Messrs, Johnsoя. Stokes and Master, prosecuted on behalf of Mesara, A. Holt and Company and informed his Wor- ship that he had been instructed to ask for the case io be dealt with summarily. Although" he asked for the case to be dealt with in that manner, he would sak bia Worship to deal with the defend- ant as severely as lay in his power, not on account of the gravity of the offence, but on account of the foot that, the defendant held a position of trust. It was his duly sa quartermaster of the ship to guard cargo and to prevent theft. The purser had reason to believe that stuff was being stolen from the cargo and he had also reason to believe that a box containing china, which he believed was n wedding present for some settlere in Puget Sound was also being tampered with."

Box Broken Open.

In Manila the purser examined the box and found that it had been broken open; part of the contents was extracted for the purpose of identification; he took One saucer from the case and had the box re-made. Just before the hatches were closed when they were about to leave Manila, the purser looked for the box and found that it bad not again been tampered with. Da arriving in Hongkong, yesterday, looked for the box just as the hatches were taken off, but he found that the whole box had gone. A search warrant

obtained and Sergeant Clark Went to the defendant's cabin and made a search. He found the articles set out in the charge, the bulk of them being found in one of the bunks in the cabin. The defendant immediately took the responsibility for the theft and said that he alone was to blame. He also showed how some of these articles had been secreted in the bulkhead, between the wood and the iron plating in the cabin. It was all taken away, The value of the stuff was, according to a low estimate, $630, bat in regard to the chins, of course, that was a particularly mean sort of theft. The defend-

Peking, Received May 7. It has been decided that the crown to be worn by the President at the sacrifices to Heaven and Confucias will be similar to those worn by the Emperors Yao and Shun:

[A correspondent of the N. C. Daily News writing from Peking last week stated:-With the exception of the diadem to be worn by President Yuan on the occasion of the worship of Heaven, everything has been settled. It is believed that the diadem will be similar to that of former Emperors: but without the numerous strings of beads over the forehead. A jade belt will be worn by the President

in worshipping both Heaven and Confucius. The garment and shoes will be made in semi-modern styles to suit present circumstances,]'
