While leaving the whia Pen ang recently the steamer I 'a na, forced out of her coarse by the strong current, fouled with her propeller the anchor chain of the K.P.M. steamer Hesel, which wAS lying in the roads. It is stated, says the Straits Echo, that the Lama had to stop her engine and drifted against the Resel, crushing one of the latter'a life bosts and damaging part of the railing. Both vessels together then drifted further and the Rigel collided with the Singapore. Dragging their anchors, the three Vessels came to a stop against the Rotaraa of the Eastern Ship ping Company

Commander Macintyre, Harbour Master, Mr. L. Wemyss, of Masura. Hatton bach, Liebert and Co, and Mi Van Vollenhoven, of the K. P. M Company, were at once on the soene and tried to disentangle the steamers with the aid of the B.I. launch Malaya. The Reael wai towed off, the Singapore got oleat also. Changed Route Of American. Tourists.

Improvement in the travel facilities of a single Italian port has permanently changed the whole nature of the American travel that passes through Lon-> |don. A few years ago Americans not only came to London through Liverpool, bt also left by the same route ; now, However, Naples has become a sort of southern Liverpool and transatlantic travellers sail from there. Asļā) result, more visitors come to London, but they generally osme only once, and average a much shorter stay. The favourite way for an American to sea Europe now is to land in Liverpool, see Tondon, and then go over the Continent, ending up at Naples, and embarking there. Very many hunt at Naples, and go

panies. The advantage claimed for this kind of sters, over the older and more general type, is that of obtaining more cabin and leek accommodation for passen gers, which is a primary don-. sideration in a liner, and the secondary gain of the beneficial effect upon propulsion of the increased water-line length. There is also the point that the manoeu vring power of the ship is considerably increased by an a.m.underhung, balanced rudder, The cruiser stero also lends itself to the carrying of a more dependent armament Er direct stern fire, as the gun position is so much better Rapported, and therefore mora rigid.
