of the National Bailors and Fire- men's Union to oppose the em- ployment of Chinese on Britiab vessels bas reached a very critical stage, and there is now every prospect of strong measures being laken by the union against those owners who make a practice of employing mixed orews. On March 2 the Barry Committee of the union held a mass meeting of sailors, which was attended by some 400 men, which, after some strong speeches, re alted in a maroh to the docks, where; two vessels the Earl of Elgin and the Lord Derby-were lying, Both vessels are carrying mxed

The riggers, who were Crow, & big proportion being working on the ships, were soon prevailed upon to cease work, and shortly afterwards the trimmers and tippers followed the result that work on both vessels was at a standstill. The attitude of the sailors was so threatening that the police were called in.
