The vergel sheltered at Löch Roag for three daye. The chief driver tried the density

of the boiler water which be found stood at 132 ounces. ~ Uwing to s Loch Roag, it was thought that stream of fresh water flowing into

the water there would be less dense, and accordingly the op portunity was taken to freshen the contenta the boiler by twice pumping up to a full glass and then blowing down. This reduced the density to 12h ources. On the following day the boiler water was again similarly fresh- oned, but the density was not tried. On March 6 the weather cleared, and a move was made to proceed to Hoa, After a few revolutions, the fead pipe joints, on the length adjicent to the main obeck valve, gave out. The second driver, who was on watch, went into the tokehold to attend to the fires, and found, bath furnace crowne coming down. He called the chief driver, and. the firos were drawn. Whilst this was being done an escape of Boom was heard, so all left the engine-room. The explosion then 03curred and denes volumes of steam came from the stokehold. The vessel was towed back to an anchorage, and eventually to Fleetwood, where it was found that a hole 6 inches by finch had formed in the crown of the starboard furnace, due to the precipitation of salt.
