Shareholders will tee with pleasure the substantial increase n these figures, when compared with last year's balance sheet. Cur- fent Accounts and Fixed Deposits, sé well as Loans and Advancas have remained on an equal level, a substantial increase will be found in the Bills Receivable Account, whereas Drafts Payable is a new item in the books.

The Directors are pleased to record that arrangements were successfully made during 1913 with several Banks in America to sell drafts on Hongkong for account of this Bank which shows the increased confidence the Bank enjoys,

Our relations with foreign countries are gradually de- veloping, we have at present 26. accounts with Banks outside the Colony of Hongkong, and tho turnover of these accounts is continually increasing.

In accordance with the Arti- oles of Association, Meeers. Lam Woo, Li Yok Tong, Lau Ting Sam and Ya Po Shen retire from the Board, bai, being elegible for re-election, offer themselves sccordingly,

The O.P.R. 3.4. EMPRESS OF RUSSIÁ loft Nagasaki on the 25th inst. at B a.m. and is due to arrive at Kobe on the 26th Bast, at 7 a..

The H. A. L. a., SCANDIA loft Bhang- hai on the 24th inst. at 3 p.m. and may be expected here on or about the 27th inst.

The T.K.K. a. NIPPON MARU which sailed San Francisco on the 27th Feb. is expected to arrive at this port via Honolulu, Japan Ports and Shanghai on the 27th inst. at between 2 to 4 p.m.

OBNDARMES INTERFERE WITH NEWSPAPER.

A considerable consation was caused by the report that the Government had closed the Shuntien Shih Pao, but an investigation proves that the report was exaggerated,

It appears that at four o'clock in the morning twelve gendarmes entered the offices of the newspaper, stoppad publication and prevented ingress and egress. By means of a subterfuge, bowever, the staff managed to telephone to the Japanese Logation who seat thren soldiers to investigate. The gendarmes sail that the Shuntion Shih" Pao had said that General Wang'a soldiers and the White Wolf brigands were on the friendliest terms, and published other criticisme which were untrue and unlawful. The Japanese Minister telephoned to the Waichiaopu who in- structed the Lochupu to withdraw the gondarmes. The paper was issued later.

The best informed quarters are unable to forecast the likely Premier or Cabines, both Marquie Saionji (a former Premier) and Mr. K.. Hara (Minister of Interior) being unlikely to be selected for the Premiership. The period of organisation will likely be prolonged.

CHINESE FINANCES.

PROPOSAL WHICH CAUSES ANNOYANCE.

The Financial Conference yesterday discussed the fact that the Government has eight million dollars in hand to meat administrative liabilities, and will have thirty millions by the end of the month.

The Government, wishing to take over all salt-produc. ing properties for the purposy of pledging security for the Quintuple Loan, has wired to the Civil Governors to in- vestigate.

The first report, from Chekiang, says the people are greatly annoyed at the proposal..

CHINESE CONSTITUTION QUESTION.

Peking. Received March 25.. The Provisional Constitution Assembly Conference held a in eting yesterday, the greatest secrecy being observed.

Government delegates, explained the President's Provisional Consitution Assembly Bill, which, it is under- stood, is vory similar to his Bill presented to the National Assembly in the autumn.

The Chairman appointed a Committee of "fifteen members to examine the Bill.
