• China Coast Concession,

The Imperial Merchant Service Guild Gazette states :-

After many years of persistent endeavour on the part of the Guild, indefatigably backed up by those concerned, the fact that Captains and Officers permanently trading on the coast of China have now

been granted a free pssssge out and home, and six months, leave” on half pay after six years' service, is a gratifying innovation. Its Reema & great pity that. China Coast componies could not have seen the necessity of this before now, as practically in all other companies of a similar nature a system of leave on pay and a passago out and home has been adopted as a matter of course. Many of the companies finding that they could not get Officera to serve for three and four years have been compelled to reduce the limit to two years in order to keep their vessele elliciently officered. Even with a passage out and home after

"

years service, it is questionable. whether this period will be con sidered reasonable by present-day Officers. Despite the concession there are already signs of

stipulated period of serviceabroad in too long, promotion too slow, and remuneration has advancəd to such a degree in the hotter. class companies nearer home, that there is no great inducement for Officers to accept servica abroad at the present time. There fore the fact of the China coast companies adopting the principle of leave and a pange home on pay is decidedly a step in the right direction, and we are hop- 1ng to ase the period of service considerably reduced in the near future.
