Deeper Harbours. The effect on the world's har bours of the present deepening of the Suez Canal and the capacity of the Panama Canal in discussed by Lord Pirrio in a memoriadam
ubmitted
to the Dominions Royal commission.
He states that these conala by providing for the passage of larger vessels than at present engaged on the routes involved will encourage hipowners to build ap vesels to the maximum dimensions. Thia will 'increase the demand on the art of shipping for an in creased available depth in the. principal harbours of the wo. Id There is no doubt, he states, that the minimum working depth now desirable for a first-clas barbour,
at loust-40 feet, and, in view of the time which it takes to get harbour authorities in motion and to obtain results from them; Lord. Pirrie thinks the minimum depth which harbour engineers, or any report on harbour facilition, should now recommend is at least 45- £96.10. feot.
