Shipping Outlook...

After two years of abounding prosperity the shipping industry finds once more the prospect of depression says the Manchester Guardian. Freight rates, which daring the first half of the year lower than those obtaining dur were on ssatisfactory level though

og 1912, steadily went from bad to worse during the autumn months; virtually every market being affected by the slump. In. all directions the demand for tonnage hos fallon off, an this, coupled with the high price of bunker coal and the allround increage in working expenses, has caused rather a gloomy feel- ing to prevail in many quarters, especially among owners of vessels of the tramp class. The fact is that with the slackening of the trade boom the supply of tonnage is in excess of th demand, a state of affairs which will be greatly aggravated when all the steamers now under construction in British and Continental yarda are placed in commission. More over, it is only too probable that the moment shipbuilders are willing to accept contracts at lower rates there will be a rush on the part of cargo boat owners to acquire now tonnage, the

views of owners as to the fatore differ rather sharply, but the general opinion appears to be that freights will continue to be remunerativo for another twelve months at least, and that by that⠀ time the influx of new tonnage will have made its influence felt in the usual way. A feature of the industry which becomes more marked every year is the invasion by the liners of trades in which the tramp boat formerly enjoyed a virtuel monopoly. This ten dency can be witnessed in the American cotton and gram trades, and it constitutes a sign of the times which prospective investors in tramp abip owning companies should ponder..

Lighting Australian Coast." The sum of £50,000 a year is to be spent on lighting the Australian coast as soon as the lighthouse branch has a properly organised staff. The part of the Australian coast which requires most lights is that within the Barrier Roof, coming down from North Queensland. It is proposa ed to erect lights at Clark Island Chapman Jeland, Tih Tih island, Heath Benf, Dhu Resfand Coquette Island. Then it is in tended to provide a new light at West Point, in Tasmania, and re pairs to the Cape Schanck light in Victoria, are also to be unde. taken.
