This is a feature which we have not observed on any other vessel, and in the dark of night it serves a very useful purpose, as indicating where the cruiser lie. The idea might be followed by merchant people have occasion to use sampane to get to steamers at night auch an identifying mark would be of the greatest help.

In the course of a leading article in our columns on the teach. ing of English in Hongkong, a day or two ago, the subjects o' history and geography were mentioned in passing. This reminds us of an observation made by a local schoolmaster in our besting some little time ago. He is a man of more than a few years experience at Home and in this Colony, and he offered the assertion that the method of teaching history in Hongkong was a wrong one. But we venture to doubt whether the method of teaching history| anywhere is as good as it might, and should, be. It is true that young people do not wander now, as in our younger days, amid dreary desert of dates and monarchial records; but they are still asked to make their way, if they can, through a maze of what Emer son called "shallow village tales."
