drifting helplessly in the Red Sea with 800 Mohammedan pil-" grimson board for nearly a week draws attention to a port and a trade of which little is beard in Northern Europe. Mohammedans are expected to make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lives. The pilgrima must, according to the places whence they come, stop at certain stations indicated by the Prophet himself, to prepare them- Belves to accomplish their saintly duty.
While many travel overland tens, of thousands have to pro- coed to Mecca by sea, Jeddah, in the Red Sea, is the port of. Mecca, and it was here presum- ably that the Theseus was bound with her human freight,

Armed Merchantmen.
The now edition of Rhodes'a Shipping Anonal cortains an article over the signature o Landeman which amounts to a stronz indictment of mohart men wilgans us to allo s tlem to put up a defeire aginst anyTM hostile puiters, by which thing. might be nth oked in war.
„From the very fires the scheme. has presented Lumeruspints of
hand. There is, however, que very difically, and upon several of thens Land man laa ho vy important point to which he does not refer probly because it is so obvious. It is known that such merchant ships. aa are. destined to be armed by the Ger man Government in the event of war will be properly commission- ed privateere, enjoying all the all the risks of ordinary warships. There is as yet, however, nothing to alow that the captains of British armed merchantmen will. carry thefe commissions with them, and if they do not, the frat shot they fire, even though it be in defence, will make pirates of them.
