Japanese In America. Questions affecting the im- migration of Japanese into the United States of America continue to be much discussed in the Japanese Press. The latest num.“ ber of a monthly magazine entitl el Commerce, contains a report on the result of investigatione con- duuted by the Japanese Å sociation in America, regarding the California land question. According to their report, the Japanese residents in California st one time numbered as many as eight ythousand, but now the unm- ber has decreased to only fifty-five thousand, as a result of restriction placed on immigration by the Japanese authorities: The report lso throws some light on the etual conditions of the Japanese residents in California. It says that while it is true that the bulk. of the Japanese seft era in California are engaged in agricul- ture and are yearly consolidating their basis of activity there na agricultural entrepreneurs, they have no means such in- fluence as to render the enactment of the land law imperative. Ac- ording to the latest investiga tions, the Japanese agricultura Liste in California, possessing heir own fields, number 778, and the ares of their cultivated land" a 20,571 acres, valued at $2,300,000. The tenants number 4.832, and their fields comprise 219,182, cores, of which 125,000 orea are leased, the payment to the land owners annually aggre gating $3,200,000.
