The American Tresty unders which Missions were given the [right to lease and purchase land. ia China 'for missionary pur poses" is stretched to ne inoon- siderable extent when land að quired by virtue of it is sublet ät inflated rentals. The Treaty certainly provides that mission aries may erect on land acquired for missionary purposes such suitable buildings as may be necessary for the carrying on of their good work," bat godowns and office buildings, to say nothing of a large number of re sidences, can scarcely be consider ed as coming under the purview of the Treaty. The Chinese Customs,

It is both surprising and en couraging to learn, on the authori ty of the Inspector-G. neral of Chian's Maritime Custurias, that the Customa receipts for 1913 exceeded those of "1012 - (which wore the highest on recorif) by no less than four million taels. The total receipta amounted to nearly. Tis. 44,000,000. Ten years ago. they amounted to only Tis. 30, 000,000, and this fact is eloquent of the growth and progress which is taking place in spite of political o avulsions with their attendant checks upon trade and commerce We shall have to wait some time iet for the interesting analysis and review of the trade of Chial which are annually compiled by he Statistical Department of the Customs, but we are told that moat of the "porta slow do increase, and this is notably be 0180 with the largest

f them-Canton, Shanghai, Han tow and Tientsin. It je farther announced that the revenues of the Customs have been sufficient to meet the payment of all loans ecared upon them as well as the entire Boxer Indemnity for 1913 This result exceede even

very recent anticipations, for the In pector-General' had been cal- ca'ating that part of the Boxer in lemnities, to the extent of £5 000, would have to be drawn fr m the salt revenues.

China Mail.

The Status of Women In China. It has remained for the pioucers of the missionary movement in Chian to show, both by example and precept, that it was the duty of the Government or of someone to teach girls as well 8 boge. The common sense of the Chinese in the more advanced town has come to recognise this and to-day female education is a part of the al ambition of the more ealigh trned of the people. It must always remain a fact, however,

ONCE DRUNK ALWAYS DRUNK. in their national history that they

were not indebted to any inspira tion or even instruction on the part of their Sage for this real gain to their national life. He was silent, and it was left to those who were alien to the people Telephone No. 1463 to introduce this simple duty to the Chinese people. It will he Feen, therefore, that whatever ba the fact of the present movement. to place Confucianism in tha Becendant in the minds and beartatt of the Chinese people, he will! remain not only lacking in the lirectione he left, as suggested by Mr. Bone, but also in this most important sphere of every-day morale in which everybody is concerned and the observance of which goes to make for the real stability of a nation.
