THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1913.

THE INNOCENT GOLFER. pens, we shall get some practice with a club which the duffer in us. ually chary of employing.

Pleasures of Playing Afone.

A Conerous Friend.

The short Saturday afternoons I have frequently remarked are with us, and the average how few beginners can safely golfer, unless he can get away handle a brassie, bat, once it is from the first tee by half-past confidently used, it is an unfil- two, at the latest, will not going and generons friend. And near the course. We are all familiar with the congested state of the links from one o'clock onwards, but at three the first tee is usually clear on most courses, and, with at least an hour and a half of daylight remaining, it is always possible for a player to put in ten or doren holes.

Half a round is better than no golf, and to the man who has been tied to his desk all the week, and cannot leave very early on the Saturday, its value" is, inestimable. It is curious to remark the number of men who practically relinquish golf during the winter months. Be cause they cannot get to their elab until late in the afternoon, and know they will neither get a round nor a partner, they give it up altogether. It is a mistake to be dependent upon Time or a partner. Golf is above Tims, and is no respecter of persons There is a peculiar pleasure in playing a few holes by oneself which I count among the greatest attractions of the many-sided

game.

The Grat few holes are deserted, and the last of she trailing couples can be seen in the distance, hurrying to complete the round before darkness falia, as though there was's peculiar virtue in playing the whole sightshanghai, teen holes. I am monarch of all | I survey, and there is beauty in the declining sun on a winter's afternoon which only the solitary golfer cau appreciate.

Down gooa another ball, and the green is reached. Putting is then a real pleasure. Again and again, putts, long and short, can be essayed. No one is incon- vesienced, and one complacently! strolls to the next tee feeling thos some of the shots played would not have disgraced a professional.
