The Press and the Public It is doubtful in the extreme if the publication of a mers copied report of a meeting held hundreds of miles distant from the ret sidence of the aggrieved party, a report which was admittedly pablished without malice,, would have been deemed as serious by a jury as it evidently, was by a single judge, for while juries are notoriously generous towards the victims of wanton or malicioas wrongdoing they discriminate with great care where the intens tion was honourable and when the sot complained of was within ho ordinary fanctions of the newspaper alleged to be at fault On the latter, provided no malice be alleged or was evident, ther will seldom, if ever, inflict a hard- ship. It is regrettable that the Straits Tmies does not see its way alear toward perfecting an appeal and thus determine, once and for all, the distinction bei tween impersonal criticism and malicious comment.
