Wireless Progress

Cape Race station, made famous by services rendered in a most dangerous portion of the Atlantic and destroyed by fire on 5th May last, bao been reopened without loss of time in penially, constructed fire-proof quarters. New Orleans, which few people realise is an American port second only to New York, is erecting one of the most powerful stations in the country and similar equip- ments are going up on Swan Ieland, Santa Mara and Sam Antonio, Cubs, the stations, ench | 800 miles apart, forming a' chain for regular commercial work. It is impossible to recount all that has recently been done to promote wireless telegraphy, but enough is bere set forth to prove that while Hongkong sleeps the rest of the world is up and doing. The van Winkles of this colony may yet receive a’rude awaken- ing. It may then be too late, for irretrievable damaga will have been done to the prestige of the port ere it is able to fulfil the rei quirements that have been so long agitated for.

Daily Press

Chinese Rallways.. "Recent experience of the financial possibilities of China's railwaye has been so striking," eaya Mr. Ker," that even the most ignorant and inexperienced of Chinese railway directorates may have it driven into their heads at any moment that penny- wiseness in the sapply of loconto- tives and rolling-stock is pound- foolishness, and that railways that contrive to pay big dividends with insufficient stock will provo still more lucrative if properly equipped." The danger fore shadowed in the Trade Report is that, when this fact is fully borne home to those responsible for the management of Obino'o rail ways, there will be a rash of ordere. for locomotives and rolling- stock for quick delivery, and that unless the British worke are prepared for this contingency, they may be so fully cocopiad in filling orders for home and colonial railways that the oppor tunity may paas over their heads, and such a proportion of Ameri can and continental products will pass into nas on China's railways that it will be found impractic able or undesirable to work British types side by side with them. This danger, we believe, needs only to be pointed out to be averted; English manufac tarere bave never shown a tendency to under-estimate the undeveloped possibilities of China, "and are sure that the potentialities of her market for rolling stock, and the possibility of it being dominated by Ameri- can or continental types, will be at once realized.

Nothing has yet been decided about the uum- ber of the how new training ships, or where they will be or dered; but evidently the Chinees now felly recognies the need of a navy if they are to maintain their position in the world.
