China's total import of kør- orone oil in 1912 amounted to nearly 198,000,000 gallons, or 38,000,000 gallons less the in 1011 the decrease in American oil alone being 34,000,000 gal- lons This decrease is not sur prising, in view of the. exceptionally large arrivals in 1911, and iu the trade reports from Shanghai, Hangehow and Ningpo the diminished import is attributed solely to auriina stocks. At the Yangtae ports, how ever, and at Swatow and Canton the unsettled conditions of the interior are given as the chief causes of the decline, these condi- tions being aggravated at Han- kow by the complete destruction of the native city during the re- volation. The trade in kerosene oil was specially affected by the excessive issue of paper notes, In the first quarter of the year the Asiatic Petroleum Company's business in Hanan Province was. reduced to practically nothing from this cause, and during the whole their Yangtae trade was hampered by the expense of remitting money to Hankow. A serious decline of over 3,000,000 gallons in the import of American oil to New ohwang ia accounted for by the partial diversion of the trade to Dairen as the port of entry to Manchurie, On the other hand, the reports from Wuchow in the Bouth, Chefoo in the north and Shaal on the Yangtse, call atten- tion to increases aggregating nearly 8,500,000 gallons.
