wards at once conquiting an atlas | FINE FRENCH INFANTRY. to find out where in the world it might be. Having surveyed and mapped it, he proceeds to con stitute himself the acknowledged and only authority on this little kawa bat not unimportant coral island. Hence the production of book bearing the title Pemba, The Spice Ieland of Zanzibar, by Captain J. E. E. Cras ter, R.E. (Fisher Unwin, 12s. Bd. net). The island lies shout five degrees south of the equator, just within sight of the mainland of Africa and between Mombasa and Zanzibar: it is about 35 miles in length by ton in braadth. Since most stuamera which visit that coast call at both the latter islands, and the rus from one to the other takes but a few hours, the usual custom is to leava port about nightfall; thus Pemba is seldom even seen, by passengers who are familiar with the two more important islands, for it is passed in the dark. Its appearance, when it is seen, and ite reputation are equally un- inviting, for it is a long, jungle covered, fever-haunted place, surrounded by coral reefs which make navigation difficult, and inhabited by a

hand ful of Енгоровня. Pemba, however, produce about two- thirds of the entire cloves crop of the world, and Zanzibar most of rest. This is due to the singular delicacy of the clove tree, which is dependent for existence on a combination of climatic conditions which Pemba prosides more satisfactorily than any other tropical district. Even on Pemba the olove tree will grow in select ed regions alone; but were it oan grow at all, it flourishes Curious- ly enough, the clove tree is not indigenons to Pemba, but wAB brought originally from the Moluccas; and es much does it appreciate its adopted home that it will grow, there wild, whoreaS elsewhere it can scarcely be got to grow at all.
