Mr Chan apparently backs up his proposals by five arguments. He maintains first of all that Con- fucianism is the Lost perfect ro ligion. He then refers to the past and shows that through the ages China bas recognised Confuci- aniem as its state religion. He proceeds and affirms that all countries bave an established re- ligion, and therefore Chins should not be without this necessary help to its stability. He further. goes on to show that even if Confu-" Cianism were established, it would aot interfere with freedom of faith and worship, for no one would be compelled to accept it under pains and penalties. He also maintains that unless Confucians is estab. lished, and has the protection of the Government, it is feared that it will not be able to secure and win back the hearts of the com- mon people to it, and therefore will not experience the advan- tages which come to those who follow its precepts and endorse its teachings.
