THE FOURTH GYMKHANA.
Successful Programme Run off this Afternoon.
The fourth gymkhana mesting, at Happy Valloy to-day, promized, to be graced by perfect weather. At noon the sun shone at its fier- cest; but just after half past tWO, the sky became overoast and a drizzling rain not only damped the ground but the feelings of those going coursewards.
4
A shower in the early morning would have had a beneficial effect apon the turf and would have made it less trying to ponies of fender foot." Ponio that were held in favour before the after- noon shower were displaced in the minds of many by othera known to relish damp under- foot."
"Long before the ponies put in an appearance for the first race, Europeane and Chinese
were
taking tickets for the sweep- stakes, and though the count eventually might prove that in- vestors were no no keen as li appeared, their early parcbass of tickets was a good augury.
There was but a 'sparse at- tendance present half an hour before racing, and, with the sun breaking through the clouds, fifteen minutes before the start, esemed to bring with it, hosts of gymkhana patrons, including many ladies. The appearance of the D.C.LI. band further help ad to brighten the proceedings.
The first jockey to mount the scale was Mr. Bruston who weigh, ed in for Joss Mighty in the Gymkhana Stakes,
Among the earlier arrivals were Mr.R F.U. Master, Mr. Woodhours, Mr. Ellis Kadoorie, Mr Maroné Slade, K.O;, Mr. P. M. Hodgson, Mr Leo d'Almada o'Castro. and Mr Soares..

What
It was
[It was, as the "Telegraph" claimed, before the event, foregone conclusion that over the distance events, Finch would give Bertbet all he desired.. and perhaps a little more. Despite the fact that Shanghai led until yesterday, it certainly appears on paper that the Changhai cootingent is a one ma affair as fer sa actual swimming is concerned, and that the team relies greatly on Berthet. Up to the present no-one eles seems to have made a show, and surely. A resolve man would not-in frot should not-bs kept co far in the background as the reesi ve men in this cars has, assuming that Shanghai bave a reve man. would happen then if Berthet was to break down, is too serious to contemplate as far as ourportrivals are concerned. It was considered a little doubtful whether Finch would triumph over Berthet in the 220, but events have proved that the race was in very rafe kraping, sincs Cooke was second and ready for any emergency that may bave, crop- pad up. Of coures Finch won very easily, though the exact distance by which he won is not slated. certainly a little surprising to find that Cooke should take the sprint event, and that both himeslf and Finch should show up so well in the 220, and yet thst Hongkong should lose the team race. As regards the diving competitions, the leas one says about them whether here, or in Shanghai they take place, the better, as in the true sent of competi tion they are a misnomer. The town in which they take place has the whole of the town to call upon, whereas the visiting team has but a limited number, and it cannot be expected that a team can bring a man with them for ce particular event. Since Colmer won the competition for throwing the polo ball we can hope that bis terrific throwa". will mean that Hongkong will notch the points in the polo match. As for the other swim over distances, it can ba tafely left to Finch to look after the premier position, barring acoident of course. It Cooke swims in anything. like the form he showed yesterday, he will do much to worry the Shanghai men whilst Berthet is making the rauning. Hongkong appear certain to win on form. Ed.]
