of a glass bulb with a capillary tube attached, the bulb being filled with alcohol which expand- ed with temperature, the expan- sion being indicated by movement of the alcohol up or down the capillary. The scale on the thermometer was purely an arbitrary one, and it was not. until Hooke, in 1881, suggested. the melting-point of ice, and the

boiling point of water, that any attempt was made to obtain a fundamental scale of temperaturo. Thirty years afterwards in 1714, Fahrenheit suggested his scale. A Busy Department. Few people probably realise the extent of the excellent work done in this Colony by the Department hitherto known as that of the Registrar General, whose title, bowever, has recently been changed to that Secretary. for Chinese Affairs, which gives a better idea of the duties under taken by the Department. Mr Hallifax's Report on the work of the Department in 1912 was laid on the table of the Legislative. Council yesterday, and it will not be without interest to glance briefly at its contents.
