End of the Punitive Expedition:
The "panitive expedition" bas come to a speedy and ignominious end. The surrender of the Wn-d sung forts (the forlorn hope of the rebels), and the abrogation of: the independer if Kwangtong, have sealed the fate of a hastily conceived and ill founded attempt on the part of a handful of self y seeking and plausible politicianai to oust Yuan Shih-kai by force from the presidential chair. The strong man" has prevailed to wield his influence, however die. tasteful it may be to some, with greater power than ever. The panishment of bis enemies has been swift and bure: In less than two months from the time when the flag of revolt was raised the leaders of the rebellion have been [scattered abroad, and some of the minor lights have paid the full penalty of their miadeede. It now looks very much as if the ond of the so-called punitive expedi tion will see a now Obins, more securely united in purpɔso than
ever.

The Oplum Stocks. According to a report made hy CANTON General Chang recently to the Sonioty in Poking which seat him on his mission to England, Mr Theodore Taylor bad told him that, although there was som“. talk of the British Government' demanding compensation for the obstruction of the import of the opium stocks " into China, these demands were mero formalities emanating from the diplomatic officers sad that the British Government nover world insist upon it.
After the speeches made by Lord Chero and Sir Edward Grey wo imagine the Chinese Government will hesitate 'to secept the word of Mr. Taylor on the question. Clearly the British Government is relying upon the good sense of the Chinese Govern ment in the matter, with arma confidence that they will allow i these stocka sa be gradually work...... vá of an contemplated by the Agreement under which they were bought by merchants from the Government of ludia for sale in China.
