With the words quoted above Dr. Carl Commentz opons his study of the effect of the introduo- tion of oil motors upon the profit- earning capacity of cargo ships, and the passage will doubtless meet with general agreement. So far, the whole matter is in the experimental stage, and the ex- perience which is now being gained will naturally serve as the basis of future practice. The

bustion engine for merchant ships of ordinary size, however, is now beyond question. The faot that a motor with 2,000 effeotive h.p. on ono shaft ja already under construction for ship's purposes shown the possibility of building larger nita, and experimental instal 1stions are projected for as much us 120,000-h.p. on one shaft.
So far, says Dr. Commentz, little has been published concern- ing the cost of motor installations, which is, of course, largely dependent upon the manner of working the suxiliary, machines. It is, however, difficult to see why they should be dearer than the total installation of steam engines and boilers. Already competition ia beginning to show its effects, and, with time, motors may even be cheaper to build than stean engines. A recent tender was only 20 per cent. higher for motors than for a steam install- ation of similar power with all the auxiliary engines. Weight and price per horse-power are
