"THE BIG 4" OF THE

It was probable, he said, that" new arrangements would be made with steamship companies, and new lines would be developed, if possible, so that Australia would be in more direct commualcation with England. A subsidy would probably be given. At present London did not give all the modern facilites which other ports offered, but that might ba be- cause, being a larger port, it was more difficult to move.

I hope the day is not far distant, said the Premier, when means! will be devised of informing the British public more frequently and fully concerning Australian affairs. One thing which atruok me about England is that what we call patriotiem ie not exhibit- od in such a demonstrative way as with the people of the Overssss Empire, but I have learned to understand that it is deep-seated and real, and, although it is not kept in the window, it is in stook and will be delivered when the occasion orders it. 1 shall return to my country with very vivid impressions of the extraordinary. commercial and industrial activ- ity of the chief centres of the United Kingdom, which indicates that the virility of the people of these islands is not on the de cline: London strikes one as a city of absorbing interest. It is fed, cleansed silently, but with won- derful sagacity. But its slums are appalling and ghastly.

Of the fature of Australia I am more qualified to speak. We are.
