A Chinese cook, for instance, who would earn $15 (Max.) in Hongkong receives as much as from forty to sixty gold dollars a month in Vancouver and in addition imposes conditions as to living off the premises, holidays and the like which would make the average Hongkong housekeeper turn grey. The poll tax while it is & fruitful source of revenue to the Government is really a failare as far as restriot- ting the entry of Chiness is con cerned, but has a beneficial effec in raising the price of Chinese labour more near a par with that

paid to the white man and thos we hear less of the hardship of Oriental competition from Canada than from the more favoured American State of California.
