· PATROLLING THE PACIFIC.

Captain Rolleston, R.N., who has just relinquished the direction of the Royal Navy Establishments in Australian waters, states that the ideal and ambition' cherished by the people of Australis and New Zealand is that some plan will be evolved in time whereby they will co-operate with the Dominion of Canada in jointly patrolling the Pacifio and thereby. preserve and maintain British prestige in those waters. Passing on to the subject of Australia and Japan, he said to Reuter's agent at Viotoris, B.O.:

I think Australians are needlely alarm- ed over the so-called Japanese menace. Japan is an ally of England, and I ees no like- lihood of those friendly relations being terminated for many years. In any event, my view is that Japan will have her hands fall elsewhere and will not be an interloper in Australian waters, Suspicion has been aroused over the occasional visits of Japanese.
