CHINA'S FOREIGN TRADE.

The annual report on the foreign trade of China is always interesting, but that for 1912 is more than usually instructive. The year dawned gloomily amid all the horrors of civil war and with famine prevailing in many districts se the result of the floods of the preceding year. Even when the new Government was established order was far from restored for many days. Its authority is not finally established yet, in fact. But, in the early days of the Republic, brigandage and piracy were common, trade routes were insecure, and outbreaks of mutinous soldiers occurred often. In spite of all this, however, progress, as shown by the annual customs report and statistics, has been real and considerable.
