While the American Navy De-' partment anticipates enhanced national prestige as an outcome at the forthcoming cruise, the Naval Secretry expresses the belief that the visit to Europo will "react beneficially on the officers and men in widening their mental scope and on the nation in reminding it of its worldwide interests." From the point of view of prestige alone, the with- drawal of the British battleship aquadron from the Far East haa never ceased to be regretted, Every Britisher in these parts « will therefore welcome the day when naval affairs will be go nicely adjusted at Home as to permit of a seotion of the battle- fleet being released to support British political and commercial interests abroad. Nothing we are aure would be lost to the officera and men by temporary disassocia tion from Home influences; on the contrary, we feel, as does the Naval Secretary of the United States, that their mental horizon would be widened and that the. stay-at-homes would be forced to acknowledge the far flung inter sata of the Empire.
