Big Reduction in Ceylon Rates Probable.

or so to Aden and through the| Rod Ben to Suez to join the Mediterranean cable from Alex- andria to Gibraltar laid some months ago was given to a re presentative of the "Times of Ceylon" by Mr. J. E. Adamson, who is at present in charge of the Eastern Tolegraph Station in Colombo.
It will be remembered that, a few days ago, the end of the cable from Penang-which is eventually to be carried to Singapore and as far East as Hongkong-was brought eshore at Colombo by the cable ship "Colonia." However, negotiations are at present proceeding in London and in Ceylon concerning the chargo's fr cablegrams by the new route, and we are, waiting until these are com- ploto before we inaugurale! the service between Ceylon and. Penang. The idea of the negotin. tions is to obtain a reduced tariff for Ceylon and to equalise the rates between India and the Far East and Colombo and the Far East.

A Big Reduction.
At the present time messages from Colombo to the Far East! bave to be sent via Mudras, and, naturally, the cost of transmission from Colombo to the Far East is considerably more than from Madras to the Far East, for the simple reason that Colombo users have to pay for the uas of the Colombo to Madras land lice. When
the new cable from Colombo to Hongkong is. com- plete, messages will be transmitted direct and, if the present negotia- tions are sqccessfully completed, the cablegram charges from Madras and Colombo, repectively and the Far East will be equa lised.
"This will naturally mean. & big reduction in the rates from Colombo to the Straits Settle- ments and beyond. Speaking roughly I should say the saving would be about three pence or four pence per word to the Far East,'
Mr Adamson added that Ceylon Government would continue to take in traffic at their own counter as formerly and would pass it on to the local office of the Eastern Telegraph Company for transmis sion. At the present time the Company is very much pressed for office accommodation in Colom- bo, but this disadvantage, it is hoped, will only be a temporary
