A Planting Difficulty in Burma,

One of the difficulties met with by rubber planters in Burma is the rapid accumulation of grase and undergrowth. The necessity

of clearing away grass and burn 9.15

ing it at a distance from the trees is essential and this is one of the causes of the great coat of rubber plantations. Where there has been fire near them, although the trees may not appear to have been adversely affected, the field of latex is greatly diminished. Bar- mana and Indians have found this out from experience, and now take the greatest care to remove dried grass and undergrowth be- fore they set fire to it.
