trials. The arrival of tho huge battleship bas attracted much attention in the Irish in- dustrial capital. Belfast plumea itself not a little on the fact that it has the only available dry dock capable of taking in the Kongo. This is the third large warship built by Messrs. 'Vickers, Limited, for the Japanese Navy. The first, the Mikasa, was Admiral Togo's flagship in the battle of the Sea of Japan, and the second was the battleship Katori, which.. bas not econ active service. The Kongo is 704 ft. long, 02 ft. broad, and her displacement is 27,500 tons. Her contract speed is 28 knots.
The Sleurin Cargo Winch, The Maatschappij "Nederland," of Amsterdam, has recently de cided to fit the Sieurin patent cargo winch on eight large new steamers. Two of these vessels, the Boston and Batjan, both built at Hartlepool by Messrs. Wm. [Gray and Oo., Ltd., have been delivered. A practical test was made on board the Batjan. The vessel had previously loaded car. go with two winches working together with stationary dozzicka in the ordinary manner. The test ended altogether in favour of the Sieurin winch, and the ship owning
company then 'do. finitely decided to adhere to their original intention to fit - Sieurin patent winches to the number of eight in each of the six steamers they now have on order in England. The makere have also received a communica tion from Holland to the effect that Sieurin winches will be fitted to another steamer the company is having built in Rotterdam, an well as in a steamer building in Amsterdam. It is now recognised that one Sieurin patent winch is, from the shipowners' point of view, more economical and cheaper in operation than two ordinary winches fitted abreast at a hatch on board a stesmer. The patent winch prastically does the same work as two ordinary winches, while it costs less, weighs less, occupies smaller space, uses less steam, and”- requires. lose attendance." L. and..
