The report of the Japanese Consul-General at New York on the rapidly expanding trade in benn oil batween Manchuria and the United States says that an in- creasing demand for Manchurian bean oil in the Western markets in recent years has created a new epoch in the commercial develop ment of Europe. The total tonnage of staple produce ex- ported from Manchuria during 1911 was put at 1,795,582 tons, including 818,108 tons beans, 911,881 tons bean cake, and 55,593 tous bean oil, a good portion of which went to Europe and Americs. The initial import of Manchurian beans and bean oil into the United States dates back to 1910, after Manchurian bean oil was made admissible into the United States duty-free in August, 1909. The value import- ed in that year was G. $1,010,842 while in 1911 the imports into the United States were valued at $2 556,000 and in 1912 at
