Shipping and Engineering," it may be of interest to state that daring a voyage from Tching to Wanhalen, a distance of two hundred miles and back, occupy- ing a fortnight, upwards of twenty wrecked junks were count- ed, three of which were kerosene laden for the Standard Oil Co. The Tain Tane alone accounted for five wrecks and the Hsin Lung Ton for three. On the Kin-Ko- Tan (Buffalo mouth rapid) a wII- pin had been wrecked and the crew left without beds, food or money. The dip" of the Esin 4,2in. The Hain Tous appeared to be slightly more but the tur- bulent nature of the approsoh and existing conditions made measurements insufficiently ac- curate to be worth recording.

Dimensions of Ships of the Future..
One of the most interesting papers read at the International Congress of Navigation, in Phila- delphis, is that contributed by Mr. J. Foster King, chief surveyor. to the British corporation. The subject dealt with was "the pro- bable dimensions of going vessels of the future, in rela- tion to the dimensions to be given to maritime canals," and we need scarcely remark that it was ably handled. Mr. King, it seems, considers it apparent that some influence is at present hold. ing back the development in length and breadth of passenger vessels engaged in trades other than that of the North Atlantic and that these boats now lie in one of those horizontal stagen which usually occur before a
