Mid-Scotland Ship Canai.

In a recent issue of the "National Review," there was a convincing plea, from the point of view of naval strategy, for a Mid-Scotland ship canal, by Com- mander Currey, R.N., although little that is now was put forward by the writer; indeed, from some points of view, it would almost seem as if be were not complete- ly conversant with later develop- ments. This is particularly the case in respect to his references to the alternative routes. Conin- [sion on this point is harmful. At

one stage of the movement there. were two proposed routes, one traversing the valley of the Forth via Stirling to Loch Lomond, 35 miles distant, the inland lake be- ing utilised to the narrow neck of land which separates it from Looh Long, an inlet of Firth of Clyde. The other routs was that taken by the old barge canal from the Forth through the coil and iton district of mid-Scotland to Yoker 4 or 5 miles westward of Glasgow. From the commercial point of view, this latter has much to commend it.

Similar com- plaints are made regarding the delivery of Homeward mails from the East; but the irregulari- ty in probably not so great at that end as at this, for the reason that there is less likelihod of the mails. lor Europe being shut out at Vladl vostock or Harbin, by heavy local traffic, than is the case, presum+ ably, with outward mailsreaching Moscow from European points. Until the whole Siberian track is" doubled, enabling, the Railway authorities to run more express trains, the only hope of improve ment would seem to be in tho
