In Kusichow, however, the farmers scarcely give a though to official interference. In some ways this province must be one of the worst governed provinces in all the Republic. Crimes of the very worst description are committed and those in power seem to care nothing. Some very drastic changes are needed.
Spending a few days in a small town in north Yunnan, one had a good opportunity of seeing how the new order works out in an out-of-the way but [busy place, One found that since the revolu- tion nearly all fresh cases of foot binding have ceased. Destruction of Pheasants. A disastrous crusade is being made against the beautiful golden pheasants which are so well known in west China. The word has gone forth that their skins are sought affer by foreignere and at the present rate of slaugh. ter this beautiful bird is on the way to rapid extinction. It is blot on western civilization that artificial beauty should be par: chased by the final destruction of mach natural beauty.· ́

The new government schools in this place were largely a fai- lure owing to lack of funds and of experienced teachers. A visit to the principal schools made one feel that much headway must be arade before the young life of country towns is properly trained, The town is a distributing centre for salt, which comes in from the neighb.uring province of Sze ohuan. Onevory hundred catties of alt a likin tax of $3 is paid, After passing this town a large amount of this salt is takon to to Kueichow and entering that province à further likin tax of over 2 is extracted: No wonder that the people grumble and are dissatisfied. This salt question will cause trouble and rightly so, It is a shame that such a necess- ary articlo of life should be sɔ heavily taxed."
The Problem of the Lepers. We found one interesting ques tion perplexing the people. Lo prosy is vory rife and there are over 100 lepora in a small area who live by bogging. They wander in groups all over the country-sido and by sheer fear of their terrible disease extract food and alms. When & wedding is on there they go in large numbers and refuse to leave till well paid. Even by these means the amount gated by the poor people is not large. There is no doubt the fear they strike into the hearts of the people. Several of the leaders of the. town came asking if we could help them to solve the problem of the lepers.
A few days ago a Christian lepat came asking advice. His son su been a leper for years and now cannot be far from the end. The father has faithfully nursed the son for years and now is bimself a leper. A few day ago the son begged the father to give him poison that he might get away from his misory. The father was loath to do so but said "I should very much like to take the poison with him so that we might go together. "talk

The Cookwar of Baroda has lent one-fourth part of his renowned pearl carpet to South Kensington, where it is to bo scan, framed and glazed like a masterpiece of paint ing. among the jewels in the Indian section. It is less a carpet indeed than a huge and extrava- agant piece of jewellery." The Chefoo women found flocking thickly round it in voluble admiration were more taken with its richness than with its great beauty of colour and design. They made gallant efforts to count the pearls and diamonde, bat gave it up for wearinces aftor doing inches. There are six square feet of seed pearls- softly shimmer- Japan ing back-ground starred with bosses of soft gold shaped like Swatow, Amoy, Auping and Takao flowers enclosing rough pieces of diamonds, and across the milky field of the carpet run wonderful light blue stems, encircling and interlacing, worked out in some commoner materials, apparently glass beads, but with with rubies, emeralds, and sapphires hore and there. The refinement of the Straits design and the delicacy of the Iloilo workmanship quite take the mind away from the profusion of jewele. One feels that it would have been almost as beautiful if glass beads had been used throughout. The carpet the reign of" Gaokwar ond
