The fifty-ninth ordinary general meeting of the shareholders of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, was held on March 10 on the Bank's premises, 38, Bishopsgate,under the presidency of Sir Montagu Cornish. Turner, the chairman of the company.
Mr. T. H. Whitehead (one of the managers) having read the notice convening the meeting,
The Chairman said: Gentlemen, may I take it that the report will be received os read? (Agreed.) In that case, before moving the adoption of the report, I will make a few brief remarks in regard to the conditions of trade affecting our operations in the East and the Far East during the past twelve months. The most
noticeable features have been tho general activity of trade which prevailed in all quarters, we may say, not only of the East, but of the world, coupled with abnor- mally high prices for many of the commoditien. I would instance jute and cotton, bides and skips

We may well expect, once the Government of China is in a bare soiled condition, that we shall have a great development and improvement of business there.
