They gave the preference in every case to their own folk, but when they found their own folk could not produce so cheaply as others, or as they could themselves on the spot, he did not see that they should be prevented from taking advantage thereof. Mr. Keswick remarked further that the attitude of the Chinese marchant to us was e tirely friendly, and the reason was that he had found when wo said we would do a thing we did It. That was the greatest recom- mendation we had, and one, he trusted, that would be alwaynoare- fully conserved by our people With regard to the Chinese official the speaker recalled that during the China Japanoro War he used to chaff the coolies or boys, and even the compradora-to whom he owed money--(laughter)—and the sale that Stonehenge shall not "The Japanese, are got-bo included but shall be preserv ting the boter of you; whyed for the nation. don't you go and fight them? And they all said, "It has got nothing to do with us; that is the business of tho mandarins. They aro put there to look after the country and do the governing work; it is no concern of ours we are traders. That showed the distinction between the two classes.
