FALSE PRETENCES CHARGE.

Story of an alleged Monopoly.

At the Police Court this after noon, before Mr. F. A. Hazeland, Chan Chang, a superion-looking Chinese was charged by Ohoug Wing Kee,alins Cheug l'ak Chan, with obtaining money by false pretences.

The false pretences was alleged to be that defendant had presented a petition to His Majesty's Government in Hong kong, and had paid to the said Government a mum of $5,000 for which he got monopoly for oiling and breaming vessels for ten years, whereas he had not presented a petition and no monopoly had been granted. He was charged with obtaining various sums from the prosecutor on the strength of this story.

Mr. Crowe, of Messrs. Hastings, and Hustings, prosecuted. and Mr. Lewis, of Messrs. Johnson. Stokes and Master, defended.
