China Mail,
The Mysterioùs Airships The new Act empowers the firing at sight at any aircraft within certain prohibited areas; and from the latest ielograma, to hand it is pleasant reading to Britons to observe that when the whole soheme is issued it will be found that the: prohibit eit areas are very numerous, and that officers will have fail power to deal with visitors." This is eminently satisfactory, and in- dicated that the Government, doubtless acting upon export adrice by the officers of our.. Defensive Forces, aro fully alive to the peril that may be encountered in allowing too much latitude to aviators. Itin also very satisfactory to know that in future no latitude respect- ing such cresa will be given at” International Aviation competi tions. It is, of course, not im- probable that the nocturnal visits that have aroused so much interest and preparation have little in them of a serious nature, as it is quite possible, that the aircraft was present for no sinis- ter purpose. Still, it is well to be thoroughly prepared for the worat that might be encountered even though the preparations may be premature,

Tin.
Now there is good evidence that tin is to be found within a hundred miles of Canton, and it. ie inexplicable that the Chinese should not have done more than they have to work it. We have been told that very old maps of what is now known as the Now Territory of Hongkong show a tin mine somewhere about the district. indicated in the recently published prospectus. Why the Chinese ceased to work it, is not now known; it may be that at the price of tin prevailing a century ago, the quantity obtained was not safficiently large to make the en- ̈· terprise remunerative; or, again, it may be that the industry was strangled by the avariciousness of corruptmandarinate,... It is sincerely to be hoped that the ex- pert engineer who is shortly.com- ing to examine thesere-discoveries in the New Territory may find that tin abounds there in quant ties which it would be worth the while of a company to exploit, and so add a new and profitable enterprise to those already in er- istence and, what is equally im portant, furnish the Government with a new source of revenue.
South China Morning Post,
Men for the Navy, While it may not be possible. for the British Isles to fully man the warships of the Empire, it may be accepted that the example already set by some of the co- lonies will be emulated in other. directions. Whon occasion arises, we firmly believe the growing dominions overseas are ready not only to express their patriotiem in warshipa butin their full equipment of trained man- hood. It is not a far cry to the establishment of colonial navies, working in perfect har mony with the guardians of the heart of the Empire. In a few more years we shall doubtless find a growing desire on the part of the dominions overseas to man with their very own colonial born and trained the armoured sentinels that uphold. our inheritance and our traditions, The old mother country has only to ask for men for the fleet and wo feel. sure that the
response- from loyal colonies will be as no ble as the gifts they have placed" in recent years at her disposal
