Soundings by the Aurora. The Aurora. recently returned so Hobart from a oruies of 33

lays. Captain Davis reported... he finding of a ridge 200 miles luo south of Tasmania. He found 500 fathoms of water on the ridge, while on each side the lepth of water was 2,400 fathome. This, he believes, is the counset- ing link between Australia and bo Antarctic, The "prese ice of his ridge had been suggested by Professor David. It was the in- tention of Professor Flyan and his assistant, Mr. Denny, to carry outdredging work between Hobart and Macquario and Auckland Island, but the tempestuous weather provented this. Adredge was lowered, Eve times and only three hauls were made. A num- bor of new marine vegetablesand inimal specimens were found and brought to Hobart. Soundings were carried out pretty extensive- ly by Captain Davis, and in the vicinity of Macquarie to the east- ward, where shallow water was expected, 2,700 futhɔme was sounded and no bottom touched, owing to the wire carrying away. Captain Davis has made a number of soundings in places were no depths are shown on the charts, and it is expected that these will prove of great value to ocean- graphers.
