Turkey's Decision

Turkey by the peace settlement must inevitably lose a very great part of her European territory, --possibly nine-tenths of it--but na M. Poincare declared in the speech to which we have alluded, ho will still have a flourishing Empire of considerable extent in Asis, and "she ought to concen- trate her efforts and her hopes upon that Empire, a course which would enable her to live on tarma of friendship with the great European Powers, and par- ticularly with France." While the British Government has declared to France, "in a very friendly manner," that it has neither poli tical designs nor aspirations of any kind in those regions, France olaims to have special interests there, and M. Poincare has an- nounced that the French Govern- ment is very firmly determined to maintain in Asia the integrity of the Ottoman Empire. That, of course, is all to the advantage of Turkey. In all probability had' the war been fought to a finish the Sultan would have been driven out of Europe completely, but as it is, assuming that the Allies are left by the peace treaty in the enjoyment of the territories they now hold by force majeure, the Sultan will retain in Europe an area of about 7,000 square miles out of the 65,000 square miles over which his sovereignty ex tended before the outbreak of the war. But as Turkey comprises in Asia an area of 882,960 square miles, and in Africa 733,181 square miles, there will still remain to the Sultan an Empire equalling in extent the Empire of Germany with all its extensive colonies in Africa, and its 95,000 square miles of islands in the Pacific.

This might con- tinue, for the Filipinds have been placed on the path which leads to bigher altitudes, but the very existence of a small republic in the Far East would, we fear, bə very soon challenged.

Surely, the matter is at least worthy of consideration, and we sincerely hope that the United States will present its case in the . most favourable light, otherwise in faca of such condemnatory ex- pressions of opinion as those of Senator Root, together with the EIGHT Fanine District in terms of the Treaty referred to
