The Question of Woman Suffrage.
Why therefore should women' not have the Parliamenty vote? There is no satisfactory reason why they should not be placed on an equality in this matter with men. In every respect women are quite competent to influence the trend of politics, as compet ant, at least, as the vast majority of male voters Mr Asquith's olief objction to women having the vote is, we believe, based on his balief that the womon of the United Kingdom have not express ed a general wish for it, implying" that the suffragists representa com- paratively small body. Wongres that that is a satisfactory reason, from a practical politician's point of view, for no notion being taken in the question. It, however, is not a suficient reason why a atesman should not remedy what many men and most women feel to be an injustice. Those women who do not wish the vote will not exercise it, as is the case with many men. There is, as we have stated, no good reason why women should not be placed on equality with men in this matter, and we hope that the time is approaching to end this in- equality.

The Opium Question. We do not know what pinion tho missionaries as a body may enterisin ns. to. China's moral responsiblity for losses incurred through her own viulation of au International agreement, hut it is very evident that there is a good deal of moral laxity about the views of the ardent anti- opinm advocatos among the Chinese. We trust the glu tion of the problem may yet be found in the gradual absorption of the stock in legitimate trade. The birbrous practices to which the officials in the province of Hunan have bren resorting, in utter disregard of the national law, with the object of bringing trade in Opium, cannot but bo about a complete stoppage of the

Female Franchise. This volte face on the part of Mr. Asquith can only be ascribod "o the violence of the militant section of the suffragettes during recent years, and it is probable that the Premier is not alone in the attitude ho now takes up. The shrieking sisterligod" has alien- ato a number of politicians, and the sympathy of the publio, by disgraceful dreds in the city ns roll as in the provincos, and if the
Commoners decline to accept the amendment on Friday which would extend the fran chiso 10. the women of Great Britain, women can only credit the viragos who have de- fier law and authority. Should "defant como now, it will be only for a few years, for there is an- questionably a strong feeling abroad among sober thinking electors that women to-day do not occupy the same plane as their sislers of fifty years ago. We have advanced in many ways, and the placing of voting privileges within the reach of women may have tremendous influence on the political phase of England's fature.
