WE BEG TO ANNOUNCE
that we can now manufacture on our premises the new Kryptok Invisible bifocal Lens.
The old style of cement bifocals with their disfiguring and annoying dividing line has been supplanted by a new lens with two fool, the upper portion of the glass for distance and the lower for reading, ground from one single plece of glass.
You who wear two pairs of glasses may now use one pair instead. No one can tell that you wear bifocals. Nocement to blister; no thin segments to lose off,
Call and inspect this line. Krypty's in regular or torio form.

Dollars And Diplomacy Although it is unlikely that the new loan, whatever its amount, will be available for the debts which fell due on 1st January" last, it will pave the way for furt- her orodit, should that be necessary, for the selilement of pressing demands. The much- oriticised Sextuple loan, adjusted as it has undoubtedly been, is perhaps after all the beat arrange- ment for helping the strag gling Republic out of its mani- fold difficulties and placing it on the straight road of progress. It is also of tremendous importance to foreign interests. With stable Government in Peking, peace throughout the land, and all the great Powers helping her, does the future not hold much in store for old.China ? Soon may. it truthfully be written: "Never since the country was opened to commerce has it been in a state of greater poace and prosperity, or better administered."
Daily Press.
Slavery in China, Whether we call it slavery or not' is immatorial—the fact re- mains that these children are taken away from their homes at a tender age, being either kidnapp ed or else sold by their parents, to become the absolute property of their purchaser, until they rench suali an age that they must be thrown on the roarriage market if only they live so long. This being the normal stato of affairs, and the slave-girl being a mere domestic animal; it is easy to see that the cases of kind and con- siderate treatment that are ad- duced by apologists must be exceptional, and that from the nature of things the reverse must be far more common. Glimpses of what may happen are oc casionally furnishod in the pro- ceedings of the Mixed Court at Shanghai. There tales are heard of cruel bentinge, of arms and lega snipped with scissors or tortured with red-hot needles, and simi- lar barbarities. And if thess things happen in the Model. Settlement, whore there is always a lingering fear of police interference, what must be the state of affairs in the interior of China? If the Peking Govern- ment only realized it, girl-slavery constitutes a far worse blot on the land than does the opium ques- tion, and if a fraction of the energy now expended on illegal interfer. ence with the sale of Indian opium were devoted to the aboli- tion of this national disgrace, China would stand in a higher position before the rest of the world..

A Move in the Right Direction. The chief business of the new section (the Far Eastern branch of the London Chamber of Com- merce] will be, of course to pro mota in every possible way the commercial relations between" Great Britain and the Far East. It is really astonishing that such a body was not formed years ago, as it is obvious that it is bound to result in much good. To-day, however, it has undoubtedly be come an imperative necessity, for more than ever is the world con- tracting, day by day the one-time rast distance between Poking and London ia narrowing, and even of more importance is the fact, that moro rapidly than ever is the Orient similating the ways of the West. That, of coures," must lead to in- oressed business and it therefore behoves so important a body as the London Chamber of Com- merce to take note of there changes and be in a position to tako fall advantage of them for London in particular and Great-o. Britain generally. The new body.. should also be ablo to add ite influence on important occasions, in co-operation with the London
China Association and work with them for their common good.
