ders some few weeks back. In the event of this being true, we assume the Minotaur will once again become the flagship of the Squadron here. The change will be regretted by those who had hoped for an increase in the strength of the China Squadron. inasmuch as the Hampshire is a smallor boat than the Defence, and is, moreover, not so modern a craft. The Hampshire, however, is a very useful type of warsliip, being an improvement on the present representatives of the County class herethe Monmouth and the Kent. Her tonnage of 10,850 is some 2,000 tons more than that if the two cruisers men- tioned, while her arinament is decidedly superior; the speed is about the same, namely 23 knots, which is also the speed of the Defence. The Monmouth and Kent were completed in 1903, the Defence in 1008 and the Hamp shire in 1905.
