THE TWENTIETH CENTURY WOMAN.
It is an idea pretty widely accepted throughout the civilised world that the modern woman is daily growing loss womanly and, by consequence, less worthy the homage and reverence which our fathers paid to their womankind. If this belief required confirma tion-and unfortunately it does not one could find plenty in the papers and wires that arrive daily from Europe and America. If the suffragist movement were the only, or the most flagrant, instance of the new woman's downward tendency, there would be but little cause for alarm; indeed, it would be absurd to blame women in general for the law's want of firmness and common sense in dealing with a few misguided persons who ought to be under kindly restraint. Suffragisin exists, not by its own strength or by the justness of its cause, bat solely by virtue of the law's weakness and its unroadiness to use the powers of punishment entrusted to it.
