South China Morning Post,

The British Navy. Nothing therefore could be more calculated to stem the tide of feeling animating our kith and kin in the remotest parts of the world than the suggestion so thoroughly condemned by Lord Selbourne. Not a moment is to be lost in providing the fullest margin of superiority for the Rafety of the Empire. The recent, finsco of rednotion of armaments won a lesson not to be forgotten, and urgency is further empha sized by the serious position which threatens British naval. prestige in 1915. The Navy League has undertaken, with obaracteristic. enthusiasm, to rouse the interest of our country men to the nation's most pressing need. The Navy League soeke to this end the practical sympathy of British citizens throughout the world, and we commend its patriotic work to all who have at heart the welfare of the Em piro.

Daily Press.

Chinese Secret Societies. After a revolution that was it self the work of a well organized and at the time illegal and medi- tious society, it is only in the natural course of things that such associations should abound, but that is beside the point. China has always been honeycombed with them, and we look for little real fruit from the prosent re- pressive legislation. Boyond a couple of antiquated statutes, we have no machinery in Great Britain for fighting political con- spiracies, nor are we troubled with such conspiracies. Criticism of and opposition to the Government we have in abundanco, but being " free and unrestricted, they keep within resonable bounds, and do not constitute a danger to the State. In any sentient State, opposition to the Government mast exist, and it serves a useful and necessary purpose. It is repression that compels it to work in the dark and perverts it to treachery against the common wealth: we do not question

the vast majority-if not allo

the secret societes now existing in China ought to be ruthlessly stamped out as dangers to the common weath, but wo doubt very much whether they would have evar existed had free criticism of and a share in the administra'ions been granted. Yuan, Shih-k'ai's best weapon against these assogin tions would be an educated pab lio opinion, and a frank recogni tion that opposition to and criticism of the Government. are not necessarily treasonable, Enditious nor even objectionable.

China Mail,

The Suffrageties. The latest suffragette folly is aurely even more contemptible than any of its predecessors. That any sane person should deliberately commit such wanton outrage, by which hundred" possibly thousands, of absolutely innocent-innocent in so far as wishing to do harm to suffragiste or anyone else is concerned- people will suffer, is surely a matter for the strongest condem- nation. If the British guffra gettes imagine that they can really further the interests of their cause by such actions 64 they are at present accused of namely, by wantonly des troying letters by means of certain corrosive liquids they are very much mistaken. All along they have been on the wrong track" entirely in their efforts to arouse pablic interest (one can not possibly imagine that they would gain public empathy) by such outrageous conduotand their failure to recognise this is con- clusive proof of their inability to exercise properly the function that they aspire to. To the credit of their sex, it should be stated that many of the best and, most highly respected women in the country have banded themselves together in protest of the disgrace ful conduct of the women known as the "Militant Suffragettes,
