The Orient Line. Persistent rumours are current in Australian shipping circles to the effect that the Orient Com pany are contemplating the in- auguration, at an early late, of a line to Australia vin the Cape. A few months ago a similar rumour was current, and Sir David Ander son, who was in Australis, when asked as to whether there was any foundation for it, replied in a highly diplomatic manner, from which one might assume there was something in it or, on the other hand, that it was so much' idle gossip. Now the rumour is repeated with greater persistency, and it is regarded by some as significant that Mr. Davil Ander- son; the general manager for the | Orient Line in Australia, is short- Up going home!

Oil Engines for the Navy. "Engineering" states that the Admiralty have placed contracts for marine oil engines greater in power than any yet put ia hand for the British Naval Service. The work has been entrusted to Messrs. Vickers, Limited, Barrow-" in-Turness, and the new engines, which are of the Vickers design, are to be fitted in a vessel 460 ft. long, with oil tanks to carry 8,000 tons for the supply of oil the fuel for warships at 888. There will be two ongines in the ship driving twin screws, and each of these will have eight cylinders. Mesars. Viokers will also build the vessel. The Admiralty had previously ordered sets of cil machinery for two vessels build- ing at the dockyards, each arrang- ed to carry 2,000 tons of oil fuel. The engines for these will be made, one set by Mossrs. Vickers and the other by Messrs. White, of Cowes.
