ing arm the artificial construccion of Colombo Harbour is completed 1pa a cost of about £3,000,000. The work was begun in 1875, and completed in 1885. Sub- sequently a braakwater to the 141.northeast, sheltering the harbour from the northeast monsoon, was completed in 1906. The new arm. attached to the southwest break water is the final protection of the two against the violence of the southwest monsoon. The erection of these breakwaters makes Co lombo Harbour one of the most commodious and bost-protooted urtificial barbours in the world, being a square mile in area and capable of accommodating 40 to 50 vassels of over 12,000 tone.
