LOG BOOK
Shipbuilding in Japan.
A Moji journal publishes a statement, probably reproduced, from Tokyo papers, to the effect that the Mitsu Bishi Dookyard placed orders in England in the spring of this year for two froight steamers of about 8,000- tons each. This has given ooon- sion for unfavourable criticism on the part of those persons who are opposed to the financial ens couragement given to shipbuil ders by the Government they urguo that this action of the Mitsu Bishi Company, which owns two dockyards, is proof that it is cheaper to buy abips abroad than to build them
at home.
Responsible officials of tho Mitsu Bishi Company are quoted as saying that whereas passenger ships have been built at home, no freight steamers have yet been constructed in Japanese yards; there is nothing strange, there fore, in ordera baing placed in England by the Company for freight steaners, as such a práo. tice enables modern methods to bo studied by officials to greater advantage than can be derived from brief visits to foreign ship

Training Boys for Sea,d Speaking at the distribution of prizes to boys on the training slip Warapito, oft Groenhithe, recently, Lord Devonport said it had always. seemed to him an extraordinary thing that the State did not re [cognise the work the training ships were doing, and their diff- culties in carrying it out, The fenture in these training supremo ships was that the boys were thoroughly accustomed to hand- ling boats, and unless the old race of eeamon of the Mercantile Matine was going to dio out, something would have to be done to acoustom boys training for the son to handle, boats ofliciently and woll.
Admiral Sir A. Douglas an- nounced that, during the year, 02 boys were drafted to the Royal Navy and 103 to the Mercantile Marino.
