LOG BOOK

Japanese and Dreadnoughts.

In the course, DE no naval notes, Mr. Fred T. Jane writes, A report comes from Tokyo the effect that the Japanese are fealing, rather off Dreadnoughts, and fancying the idea of small, swift ships armed with a single long-range gun-presumably the Matsushima idon over again. Very possibly the Japanese would like to see it, and so would plenty of other people. Unfortunately, howovor, except in smooth water, such ships would be considerably hampored in attacking a Drond- nought, owing to their unsteady gun platformis. Furthermore, it would probably be found quite impossible to build teu of them anything like inside the cost of a single 10-gun Dreadnought. The worst thing about the monster ship is that it is so inevitable and relatively economical. With the four batilo cruisers building with 14-in. guns and near 28,000 tona displacement, it does not look as if they were going for the amuller class.-L. & C. Express." Mr. Quali Bong Koo, of tho Eastern Shipping Company, was also unable to confirm or deny the report. He stated that he was aware negotiations had beon. proceeding between the Home re- prosentatives of the two com- panies, but he could not say withi wat result. In any case the whole of the Eastern Shipping. Company's boats would not be transferred to the B.I. Company.

An interesting feature of tho recently-launched Hamburg-Ame rican liner, Imperator, is that she will be content with three funnels- instead of four. The eye has be come rather accustomed to pic- tures of leviathan steamships carrying four smoke-stacks, but there is no particular virine in this number.
